Akrotiri is an archeological site on Santorini. It was first excavated in 1967. The general layout and wall frescoes were found to be in remarkable condition. This was due to being covered for millennia in volcanic ash.

The town and port dates from 4,000 years ago and formed part of the Minoan civilisation of Crete.
